Star Wars has officially provided insight into why Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker made a cameo appearance in the concluding episode of Disney+'s Ahsoka series.
Anakin's pivotal role in the fifth chapter involved guiding his former Padawan through a series of illuminating Clone Wars flashbacks within the enigmatic realm known as the World Between Worlds. Their journey led to invaluable lessons and even a confrontation between the two. In Episode 7, Anakin appeared as a hologram in a pre-recorded training video, wherein he referenced three significant villains from The Clone Wars, before his eventual return to Ahsoka as a Force ghost in the season finale.
The official Star Wars website summarized the Ahsoka finale, titled "The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord," and delivered a rather unsurprising explanation for Hayden Christensen's appearance in the climactic episode. Following Grand Admiral Thrawn's escape to the original galaxy in the Ahsoka finale, taking Ezra Bridger with him and leaving Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren stranded on Peridea, Ahsoka was met with a familiar face.
Reassuring Sabine that Ezra had found his way home, Ahsoka remarked, "Ezra is where he needs to be. And so are we. It's time to move on," hinting at a greater purpose for them on Peridea. While the two set up camp in the distant galaxy, Ahsoka gazed into the night sky. Sabine sensed something amiss, and Ahsoka caught a glimpse of the Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker, who was smiling and watching over her.
The recap on Star Wars' website explained Anakin's Force ghost appearance as a sign that Ahsoka was precisely where she was meant to be:
"The convor Morai and the Force spirit of Anakin Skywalker both appear to give Ahsoka Tano signs that she’s exactly where she is supposed to be. With this simple wisdom, reflected in images that show Baylan on his journey, Shin igniting her lightsaber as she enters the bandit’s camp on Peridea, and Thrawn and the Great Mothers arriving at Dathomir, it seems like everyone is in agreement."
As for Anakin's future appearances, it's speculated that he may continue to play a significant role in Ahsoka Season 2 or the forthcoming MandoVerse theatrical movie helmed by Dave Filoni. Baylan's discovery of ancient statues on Peridea suggests a connection to the Mortis gods - the Son, the Daughter, and the Father - who symbolize the dark, light, and balance in the Force.
A popular theory among fans suggests that Ahsoka may be setting the stage for a new era of Mortis gods following the demise of the original trio in The Clone Wars. In this scenario, Ahsoka would assume the role of the Daughter, Baylan that of the Son, and Anakin that of the Father. Therefore, Hayden Christensen may continue to be part of the MandoVerse, making a return in Ahsoka Season 2 and potentially in Filoni's MandoVerse blockbuster.
Having recently appeared on Disney+ in both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, Lucasfilm appears committed to retaining Christensen in a significant capacity, fueling speculation about the possibility of a dedicated Darth Vader show, a prospect many fans have eagerly awaited.
For those interested, Ahsoka is now available for streaming on Disney+.
