Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to grace screens on December 20, and notably, it marks the final chapter in the DCEU before James Gunn and Peter Safran's new cinematic universe begins with "Superman: Legacy" in 2025.
Recently, Wan disclosed on his Instagram that he's already immersed in another superhero venture – an animated Disney+ series named "Gargoyles."
When probed about the possibility of an Aquaman 3, star Jason Momoa offered some insights. While he expressed doubts about the film adopting a lighthearted tone, he didn't entirely rule out its potential, hinting at the tone a third installment might take.
James Wan's Stance on Directing Aquaman 3
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan opened up about his willingness to helm an Aquaman 3 in an interview with Empire. He mentioned that he hasn't directed a third movie in a series before, but he would consider it under one essential condition: the same creative freedom he had with the first two Aquaman films.
He emphasized, "I haven't directed a third movie [in a series] before, so I'd be open to doing another 'Aquaman' if I got the same freedom I've had on these first two."
Wan also acknowledged that the future of Aquaman 3 is uncertain, especially with James Gunn and Peter Safran charting a different course for the DC Universe. He admitted, "I'm not sure what direction [Gunn and Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I've learned to never say never."
The Future of Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe
With "Superman: Legacy" marking the commencement of a new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Aquaman's role appears to be evolving. Their Chapter 1 lineup of projects doesn't prominently feature Aquaman, implying that his return might not be imminent. While Aquaman may eventually find his place in the evolving DC Universe, it could be some time before we witness another Aquaman-centric film, and the involvement of Jason Momoa in such a project seems less likely.
However, fans of Momoa may still anticipate seeing him in the new DC Universe, albeit potentially in a different role, as there are reports suggesting he may take on the character of Lobo.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is eagerly anticipated to hit theaters on December 20.
